Your Next Surf Trip

Packing for your next surf trip.

By GSS Admin

Packing for a surf trip can get a little difficult with the limits imposed by the airlines and the fact that you may have to carry your boards between terminals to make a connection. Add to the mix the possibility of lost luggage and it can be tough call on what to take and where to pack it.

There are definitely a few things that you just can't do without and the more remote the location your are going to the more self sufficient you should thinking. If you don't think you are going to be able to just run to the store or local surf shop for a forgotten or broken item, then you need to pack it with you and maybe even a spare.

My goal is to keep the weight down to a minimum and make sure I carry on all required medication, toiletries, shorts, shirt, board shorts and whatever I think I will need if my luggage gets lost for a few days. I usually take a backpack as my carry-on and that seems to work out well. I have a med size suitcase with a long handle that makes it easy to pull while carrying my boards. My board bag holds two boards, leashes and my primary fin set-up, all spares are in the suitcase.

So that's the set up for luggage that I have found works best for me. So what do I pack? Again a lot of that has to do with the destination but here is a list of some items you definitely should consider:

Wax
Spare fins
Spare Leash
Ding Repair Kit
Sun screen
Bug Spray
First Aid Kit
Rash Guard
Wet Suit
Large Brim Hat
Board shorts
Medications

There are many more items that you will need, this list will hopefully get you started. Just make sure you keep the weight down and you should be all right.

What do you pack?

Do you speak Spanish?
What is your comfort level with the country?
Do you plan on renting a car?
What experience level of spots are you looking for?
How many people are in your family?
How many surf?
What will you do when it's flat?
What is your budget?
How long is your vacation?

This is just the short list of things to consider when looking for a vacation surf spot in Mexico. Taking a family on this type of vacation can add a whole new dimension to the planning process but can be well worth the time.
